EMDR

EMDR: EMDR, short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is an intervention primarily used for clients who have experienced trauma, but it can also be effective for processing through stressful and negative events, or managing symptoms related to other mental health diagnoses. Normally, memories are processed and stored in the brain, but with traumatic events, the memories often remain unprocessed and typically are associated with negative emotions. EMDR utilizes bilateral stimulation of the left and right sides of the brain to reprocess the unprocessed traumatic memories and associate them with positive emotions.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is a form of therapy that is effective for all ages. It utilizes art to help clients express and understand their thoughts and feelings related to their presenting concerns through artistic expression and the process of making art. Art therapy allows clients to access the unconscious and to provide a way to process topics that are too difficult to verbalize. Don’t worry, no formal training in art is needed to participate in this intervention!

Sandtray Therapy

Sandtray therapy is appropriate for clients of all ages. During this intervention, clients use a sandtray (like a small sandbox) and small figurines to create a miniature version of their world. The use of the sand and miniatures provides clients with a way to express themselves through metaphor.

Play Therapy

Play therapy is a therapeutic intervention usually used with children up to age 12. Traditional “talk therapy” can be challenging for a child to engage in as their brains have not yet fully developed language and the cognitive skills to express themselves in a meaningful way. Play therapy allows your child to utilize their natural form of communication to express their thoughts and feelings. Studies have found that play therapy can actually help “re-wire” a child’s brain allowing them to better regulate their emotions.
